SPRING MUSIC SCHEDULE AT THE WINERY
February 16, 2012

Ida Jo
Friday, Feb 17th, 7-9PM

Ida Jo has 2 full-length records to her name, a music performance degree, a handful of Madison Area Music Award nominations, and performances at festivals such as Summerfest, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and SXSW. Ida Jo's musical style builds on a long history of blending rock, folk and gospel music. (Think of artists like Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and The Band.) Energetic and rhythmic, but also heartfelt and soulful. Add to that Ida Jo's lifelong background in classical violin and you can start to see the roots of her expressive and graceful style. On violin, Ida Jo employs a seldom heard technique that is the combination of a folk fiddle style called "chopping" and her extensive classical training. She plays the rhythm, the harmony and sometimes even the melody at the same time. What it ends up sounding like is beyond explanation and without comparison, somewhere between an acoustic guitar and an orchestra. She is one of only a handful of violinists in the world to play in the style.

Quartessence String Quartet
Friday, March 2nd, 7-9PM

Quartessence is returning for second appearance at the winery! Quartessence String Quartet has been on the Madison scene since 1999. Heard frequently at weddings and parties, they have developed a distinctive niche presenting music of Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and other jazz standards.

Brandon Beebe
Friday, March 9th, 7-9PM

Madison, Wisconsin's Brandon Beebe has waited a long time for his debut album, "In This Place", to come to fruition. Luckily, the wait was worth it. The self-produced, self-financed collection is meticulously crafted, and the blood, sweat and tears that went into its creation can be both heard and felt. Lyrically, it is often raw and direct, while at other times it is allusive and poetic. Beebe’s rich vocals are delivered with both confidence and vulnerability, reminiscent of Cat Stevens, Elliot Smith, Ben Harper, and Ray Lamontagne, but at once all his own. Sonically, its textures range broadly: from acoustic guitars surrounded by cello and violins, to swelling tones from electric guitars and keyboards, to haunting, layered harmonies to afro-funk beats with Brazilian percussion. Songs like “Ghost" provide the perfect soundtrack for a cold winter's evening, while "She's the Moon" recalls summer's sweat and excitement. The album’s diverse stylistic range and depth make
it apparent that “In This Place” is no ordinary singer-songwriter album, and Beebe is no ordinary performer.

Steve Schad
Friday, March 16th, 7-9PM

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Steve is an exceptionally accomplished guitarist and multi-instrumentalist with a catchy and compelling style that ranges from delicate to thunderous. With his crisp command of the acoustic guitar and his engaging pop sensibility, Steve's vibrant and imaginative musicality is winning fans everywhere.

Meghan Dudle
Friday, March 23rd, 7-9PM

Meghan Dudle started classical violin when she was five years old in the Chicagoland area, performing in Midwest Young Artists Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras and quartets. After experiencing The Freighthoppers one hot August MBOTMA festival, she put down her classical violin and started to study Appalachian, blues and hillbilly swing fiddle in 2000. Before
joining Kari Larson and Lisa Schultz of The Ditchlilies in 2003, she played country blues fiddle with Lonesome Dan Kase as well as singing and playing in the old-time duo, The Phonola Winders, with New Bad Habit’s Tim Foss. Somewhere in between the years, she learned rhythm guitar and harmony singing. Playing fiddle with The Ditchlilies from 2003-2008, she has shared festival stages with Pete Seeger, The Dirk Powell Band, The Everybodyfields, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Hunger Mountain Boys, Dale Ann Bradley, and Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike. Her new solo album puts together a wide variety of classic American fiddle tunes alongside original compositions and songs. She continues to break many a horse hair playing for square dances around the Midwest and dances and choreographs with the internationally known clogging group, The Wild Goose Chase Cloggers.

Little Red Wolf
Friday, April 13th, 7-9PM

Formed in late autumn of '08, Little Red Wolf brings together the collective hard working, hard rocking talents of four Madison-area musicians. Through sheer force of will and their lyrical, multi-instrumental ways, the band is poised to take the scene by charming storm.
Combining elements of rock, bluegrass, alt-country, and the harmony-heavy vocals of swing-era ensembles, Little Red Wolf offers something entirely new and unique without forgetting their roots. Their music and sounds has been described as "versatile folk-pop" that's “distinctive and melodic,” with ”swooning vocal harmonies." Little Red Wolf plays everything from up-tempo foot-stompers and straight-up rock, to soulful ballads and genre-bending tunes. Using vintage guitars, accordion, piano, percussion, and even the glockenspiel, they’ve managed to write an impressive set of original music that appeals to people across the usual boundaries.

Ken Wheaton
Friday, April 20th 7-9PM

Please help us welcome Ken back for his second performance at the Winery. Veteran singer and guitarist Ken Wheaton has been entertaining audiences around the Midwest for nearly thirty years - in nightclubs, dinner theaters, coffee houses, and at private events. With his "finger-style" acoustic guitar work, Ken uses the natural, unadorned sound of the instrument to bring a freshness to jazz and pop standards, as well as his original compositions.

Anna Laube
Friday, April 27th 7-9PM

Born in Iowa City, IA, Anna Laube (pronounced "Lau" like "now" and "be" like "to be or not to be") began studying the piano at the age of three and later took up saxophone, oboe, violin, guitar, and harmonica. She was a leading member in a number orchestras during high school and studied oboe at the Académie de Musique Grétry in Liège, Belgium, on a Rotary scholarship the year in between high school and college. After graduating from college and moving to San Francisco, Anna got her start performing at a cafe on Castro Street called Le Bon Gateau. She has since been described as “An artist to whom you would hand over the keys to your heart” by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, composing “Intimate, heartfelt songs rooted in traditional Americana” (NPR)— and her music is receiving airplay worldwide. She's toured the US playing at clubs, theaters, conferences, benefits, live on the radio (including satellite radio on The Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour) and at festivals including SXSW in Austin, TX, the Monterey Blues Festival, and the Stone Arch Festival. In 2010 Anna was a finalist on Madison 105.5 Triple M's Radio Reality Contest "Project M," an instructor at the first ever Girls' Rock Camp in Madison, WI, and she co-wrote her first song.

SESQUICENTENNIAL BLUE IS ALMOST GONE!
December 18, 2011

Success has its own Consequences!

Our most popular wine, Fisher King's Sesquicentennial Blue, has been flying off the shelf since we opened the doors in September. We thought the number of bottles produced would last through the winter. But the Blue has been so well received by you that we are now getting low on it and expect to run out entirely this month. As problems go, it's a fairly good one to have...

You should know that we are diligently working on replacement white wines in our fermentation cellar and hope to have new dry and sweet whites available within the next two - three months.

So if the Blue is your favorite, you might want to get a bottle of it now - while you still can. As I've mentioned to folks in the tasting room, limited edition wine is like Good Theatre. You get the pleasure and joy of the experience - and you get to keep the great memories. But once it's over, well, it's over... at least until the next great production opens!

WISCONSIN GRAPE HARVEST IS IN!
October 12th 2011, Mount Horeb Wisconsin

Grapes that began to arrive at the Winery in mid-September from vineyards around Wisconsin have now all been crushed and pumped into Fisher King fermentation tanks.  Our last delivery of grapes was on October 4th with the arrival of 2 Tons of St. Croix grapes from Vernon County. What started out as just an average year grape crop has really turned into an excellent one, thanks primarily to the wonderful weather we had over the past two months. The grapes being processed in these photos all came from the Huber-Lloyd Vineyard and from Mitchell Vineyard, both located right here in Dane County.  To see more photos of grapes being crushed and pressed, along with pictures of our "small army" of highly valued and motivated volunteers, please visit the Winery's FACEBOOK page.
